I was driving yesterday and came upon four woodcock in the middle of the road on the east side of North Oaks, seemingly oblivious to traffic. It was mid-day (!) and they were walking in synch, all facing the same way and all cocking their heads forward and back in a ritualized display. I have never been so close to woodcock before, and their heavy bills and rear-facing eyes were clearly visible. It was fascinating, if a little disconcerting because they chose a blind stretch of road to do this in. Any one know what the point of this was? I am also curious that amongst all the FOY sightings no one has mentioned meadowlarks. Shouldn¹t they be here now? Anna Newton
