In preparation for next week's MOU field trip, Nate & I ran our Aitkin route yesterday. Highlights included:

* 13 shorebird species (4th street southwest from Aitkin, flooded fields a a few miles down the highway (sorry, forgot number), also sod farms on Highway 1) - included Black-bellied Plover, White-rumpeds & Stilt Sandpipers, dowitcher species (presumably Short-billed). Wish I could guarantee they would be there next Saturday!

* 16 warbler species, including Connecticut appearance at Rice Lake Refuge.

* 105 species total, although some were on drive to Aitkin County. No winter boreal species to speak of.

We do not recommend hiking the snowmobile trail on Aitkin CR 18 right now, besides being rather quiet, the ticks are voracious (over 100 taken off between the two of us).

Good birding to all.
