Today I visited the Osprey nest off Itasca County Road 45 that I've been
watching for over a month. I've been seeing the top of a little head for a
week or two, but today I saw the whole chick for the first time. The chick
stood on the edge of the nest while one of the parents fed it a little, then
flew off. I thought the chick might take flight, but after a few tentative
flaps it settled down into the nest.

Both parents have been very attentive. There is usually one on the
nest, and there is always one adult standing guard in a dead tree about 40
yards from the nest platform. I'll keep visiting-- I hope to have a chance to
see the chick fly, which should be very soon. I'll keep you posted.

P.S. -- A few days ago I placed a bird feeder filled with sunflower seeds
outside the Discovery Center in Marcell, where I am a volunteer. The feeder
was represented to be squirrel-proof. That may be true, but I can attest that
that particular feeder is not bear-proof.
