Here's a W.NY farm site with some woody photos that show some 3 week
ducklings with similar markings and beaks to Gail's duckling (which
appears to have something in its mouth and I suspect is older than
three weeks, but younger than 8; the biggest difference besides size
appears to be the change in coloration on the forehead):

Hi Gail -
Last year I saw a group of wood ducks that looked like this. I've
never seen this appearance of woodies before. I only knew what they
were because I saw them with mom. When I went back a week later they
had changed into something that looked more like a woodie. My
conclusion was that there is a short period of time when woodies
have this appearance. Maybe someone else has seen this as well.

Subject: [mou-net] unknown baby duck
This baby duck has been on Lake Vadnais (Ramsey County) in recent
days and I
haven't been able to figure out what it is. It sort of looks like a
mallard, or a wood duck, but the bill is very different and the
markings are
wrong. I've posted a couple photos on Flickr if anyone wants to
take a
look. I would really like to know what it is!
