Last weeks rain really helped provide shorebird habitat with several fields
with flooded sections(not good news for farmers). Fields were significantly
drier today vs. Tuesday, so unless we get more rain, shorebirds will likely be
harder to come by. Like last summer, Chaska Lake and Rapids Lake have far
too much water to provide good shorebird habitat. While the majority of the
fields with suitable habitat did not produce(and shorebirds tended to be here
one day and gone the next),
here is the recap for the past week from fields that did produce.
Killdeer seen every day in varying numbers
Sat. July 16- 2 Spotted Sandpiper, 4 Solitary Sandpiper, 8 Least Sandpiper
Sun. July 17- 2 Semipalmated Plover, 6 Solitary Sandpiper, 2 Upland Sandpiper,
10 Least Sandpiper
Mon. July 18- 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 5 Solitary Sandpiper, 16 Lesser Yellowlegs,
29 Least Sandpiper, 12 Pectoral Sandpiper
Tues. July 19- 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Least Sandpiper, 3
Stilt Sandpipier
Thurs. July 21- 10 Solitary Sandpiper, 8 Least Sandpiper
