As some of you already know, the American Ornithologists' Union
recently published the 52nd Supplement to its Check-List of North
American Birds. While none of the splits or lumps adds or subtracts
any species on the Minnesota list, it's worth noting the changes
affecting our state's checklist:
- The name Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) is changed to Common
Gallinule (Gallinula galeata).
- The scientific name of Snowy Plover is changed from Charadrius
alexandrinus to Charadrius nivosus.
- Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) has been moved from the Family
Turdidae to the Family Muscicapidae (Northern Wheatear becomes the
sole species on the Minnesota list in this family).
- The most sweeping change affects the scientific names and list
sequence of most of the warblers (Family Parulidae); accordingly, the
42 species recorded in Minnesota are now listed as follows:
