Chimney Swifts swiftly swooping over City Hall
Wednesday, August 24th, 7:15 p.m.-sunset
Cost: FREE!

Join Ron Windingstad, Chimney Swift expert from Audubon Minnesota, to watch one
of the truly amazing spectacles of nature, right in downtown Hastings. Each
fall Chimney Swifts gather in communal roosts before migrating south to the
Amazon Basin. Last fall over 400 swifts were observed entering the Hastings
City Hall chimney. The swifts gather in a swirling group, then drop like x-wing
fighters into the chimney, where they will roost overnight, clinging to the
sides of the chimney with their tiny toes. Sadly this tiny, flying
insectivore’s population has declined over 50% in the past 40 years. To learn
more about swifts join us for a brief outdoor presentation and then we will all
count the birds as they drop down the chimney. There is no charge for this
program as it is co-sponsored by volunteers from Audubon Minnesota, Carpenter
Nature Center and Hastings Environmental Protectors. Please note: this program
will take place on Sibley Street near the corner of 4th & Sibley in downtown
Hastings, Minnesota.
