Today the birds were active and plentiful along Sucker Lake Rd. between
the Vadnais Lakes. In a one block stretch from Fisherman's Point
westerly to where the road turns north I found 55 species from 7:30 to
9:30 a.m.! Warblers, Orioles, Catbirds, Gnatcatchers, Empidnonax
flycatchers, and Vireos were especially active in the shrubs and small
trees along the lakeshore. I saw the FOS Northern Parula Warbler and
Yellow-rumped Warbler bringing my ten day warbler count in this area to
23. Other warblers seen were Wilson's, Blackburnian, Bay-breasted,
Yellow, Nashville, Tennessee, Black & White, and Redstart.

Of note was a probable Horned Grebe I saw near the shore on the main
lake. I looked at it for some time. It did not have a black crown. The
crown was grayish. However, the shape of the head and bill, the overall
shape and size of the bird, and its demeanor and jizz led me to this
identification. But I am not really positive. Most of the time when I
see this species, I identify it immediately. Not so here. It could have
been an Eared Grebe but the crown was flatter. If someone else has seen
this bird and identified it otherwise, I would like to hear from them.
