We are doing the Project FeederWatch with Cornell this winter, and of
course as it starts all of the birds seem to just know to disappear. But
last night around 11:00 PM we had an amazing, although non-bird, surprise
at our feeder. We discovered that a Flying Squirrel has found our feeder
and can easily jump (fly) to it from a nearby tree. It was amazing to
watch him jump to the platform feeder, grab some food, jump back to the
tree, hide or eat the food, and repeat again and again. First time we have
ever seen a Flying Squirrel here, and I didn't think that we actually had
any or even the right habitat here in Bloomington!

Bird feeders can teach you new things about your environment all the time,
even when you don't expect it.

And for something bird related I went to Hyland Lake yesterday, but the
lake was almost fully frozen and the only ducks I could see were Mallards
and a Bald Eagle on the island in the lake.
