Okay, maybe that's worded a little strongly.
Andy Nyhus and I decided to work the Mississippi River as things are icing up,
hoping to refind the Great Black-backed Gull (we didn't) from earlier in the
week in Wabasha County. We also didn't refind the Townsend's Solitaire at the
Carpenter Nature Center in Washington County.
In addition to the aforeposted Long-tailed Duck that Andy spotted just north of
the US 10 bridge west of Prescott, we had three spots productive for sea ducks
south of Lake City:
1) Winona County (Hwy 61 - Whitman Dam) - 1 Surf Scoter 2) Mile Marker 69 (Hwy
61) - there is a pulloff here, and (for now) a spot of open water - 2
White-winged Scoters3) The next pull off upriver of the above pulloff - again a
spot of open water- 2 Long-tailed Ducks
Sorry if #2 & #3 are confusing. Just check all open water between Lake City
and Read's Landing!
While we did see several hundred IDable gulls, the bulk of the gulls were
extremely distant in the vicinity of Pepin, WI, if you don't care what state
you're in.
