At 1:00 today there were over 274 bald eag= les near Read's Landing. Most of these were visible from the town of Read'= s Landing and the first pull off just upriver from the town of Read's Landi= ng. One small sandbar had over 60 eagles sitting on it! There is also a n= ice assortment of waterfowl, along with both Tundra and Trumpeter Swans. From the HWY 61 Geological marker just upriver from the above mentioned sp= ots, I also found a Snowy Owl. I was standing in Minnesota, but the owl wa= s standing along the shoreline on the Wisconsin side of Lake Pepin. THANK YOU, Scott A. In Duluth, an adult male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen at Canal Park on the 11th, and this is likely the same bird first found back on November 19th. Another LONG-TAILED DUCK is being seen on the west side of Lake Harriet in Minneapolis along with a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. On December 13th, there was a late ROSS'S GOOSE at Sleepy Eye Lake in Brown County. Over the weekend, a CAROLINA WREN stopped by the feeders at the visitor center at Wild River State Park in Chisago County and it was still being seen as recently as the 13th. The park is north of Taylors Falls on the St. Croix River. That TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE which has been at Carpenter Nature Center in Washington County since November 27th was seen again on December 9th. Folks with perennials and folks with snow "toys" are eagerly awaiting that time. So far we have only seen flurries once in a while. Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann made another swing through the northern counties last weekend and reported a SHORT-EARED OWL flying from Otter Tail into Grant County along Otter Tail CR 26 on December 9. In Wilkin County on December 9. they reported NORTHERN HARRIER, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and GREAT HORNED OWL . Marshall Howe found 350 SNOW BUNTINGS in central Hubbard County between Dorset and Nevis on December 12. Among them were 30 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. On December 14 , he saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE on MN 71 at Lake Alice west of Lake George. Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann observed a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and COMMON REDPOLLS at Tamarac NWR in Becker County on December 8, and reported that the VARIED THRUSH seen earlier is still there. In Clay County they saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at the feeders of Bob O'Connor in Moorhead on December 9. PINE SISKINS and COMMON REDPOLLS were at the Moorhead State Science Center near Buffalo River SP. Their Norman County sightings included RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and BROWN CREEPER at the Hendrum county park. Mahnomen County sightings this week were RING-NECKED PHEASANT, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN and NORTHERN SHRIKE. In Polk County, Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann found two SNOWY OWLS , both along 290th St NW west of MN 32 and south of US 2. Sandy Aubol reports tonight that the EASTERN TOWHEE, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW are still coming to her feeders. A GREAT HORNED OWL also visited her neighborhood in East Grand Forks. Herb and Ron also found LAPLAND LONGSPURS and SNOW BUNTINGS in the area where the snowy owls were seen. Heidi Hughes found a GOLDEN EAGLE at 190St NW between CR 68 and MN 1 on December 10. Eight ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were also seen along 190th St NW. An AMERICAN KESTREL , RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD were seen in Red Lake County on December 9. Here in Pennington County, I saw a mature BALD EAGLE soaring over the fields east of Thief River Falls one morning this week. Thanks to Heidi Hughes, Herb Dingmann , Ron Erpelding, Marshall Howe, and Sandy Aubol for their reports. Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than Thursday each week, at [email protected] OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. From what I heard one would have been along the east side of the MN River in Blakely Township, Scott County; one would have been along the west side of the river along Co. Rd. 6 in Jessenland Township, Sibley County and one would have been at the Ney Center on the south side of Hwy 19 just east of the river in Le Sueur County. It is possible that this is the same bird in 3 different places, but that is pure speculation on my part. A 4th was seen near Le Center in Le Sueur County. I apologize for not getting more info than this, but at least it is further evidence of the irruption(assuming of course that all of the ID's were correct).=20=20 Bob Williams, Bloomington=20=20=20 ----------------------------------------------------------------------=0 D "The information in this electronic mail message is the sender's =0D confidential business and may be legally privileged.
