It will be interesting to see how much that count will be indicative in what to expect on the Ely CBC this Friday, Dec 23. The preliminary numbers from yesterday are: 1. common goldeneye (6) 2. ruffed grouse (10) 3. wild turkey (3) 4. bald eagle (6) 5. rough-legged hawk (3) 6. red-tailed hawk (1) 7. rock pigeon (160) 8. mourning dove (8) 9. red-bellied woodpecker (2) 10. downy woodpecker (29) 11. hairy woodpecker (21) 12. pileated woodpecker (4) 13. northern shrike (3) 14. blue jay (46) 15. American crow (183) 16. common raven (72) 17. black-capped chickadee (358) 18. red-breasted nuthatch (78) 19. white-breasted nuthatch (37) 20. brown creeper (6) 21. golden-crowned kinglet (2) 22. European starling (194) 23. northern cardinal (2) 24. pine grosbeak (19) 25. American tree sparrow (2) 26. house finch (5) 27. white-winged crossbill (56) 28. common redpoll (72) 29. pine siskin (3) 30. American goldfinch (50) 31. house sparrow (7) There was also a report of a barred owl on Friday. Since count week includes the 3 days before and the 3 days after the count day, the barred owl will count as count week species. There weren't the large number of winter finches that are seen sometimes, but the weather was nice and it was a fun day.
