There are several A. tree sparrows at Snappy Park by field 7. There are 4 R.B.
mergs (3 males) on the SW corner of Little Detroit Lake right off West Lake Dr.
I saw what I think was a gyrfalcon flying northbound over town. I have never
seen one, so I can't say for sure. It was larger than a red-tailed, but not
large enough to be an eagle. It's flight was very direct. 5-7 hard flaps,
then a 2-3 second glide. Wings were rounded and primaries were spread apart.
Tail was longer and narrower than a red-tailed. It's tail was straight, as in
cooper's hawk, versus tapered, as in red-tailed. It's bottom side was dark.
Head and tail were slightly darker than body. No visible banding on tail.
Flight feathers were slightly more transparent than coverts. It was overcast
during the time of observation. Any input, ideas, suggestions? I guess
Gyrfalcon, only because it's the only raptor of that size that is possible in
MN that I have not seen before. This bird certainly looked like nothing I've
seen before. Thank you for your input.
