I saw what I think were 5 smith's longspurs this morning. They were on the
exposed dirt/mud on the east side of the ditch on the north side of Co. Rd. 14.
There is a mound which I assume is dredge spoils. They were feeding on the
ground among the dead cattail stalks. They were behaving longspurrish on the
ground and in flight. They were at the edge of my optical range, and it was
overcast, so field marks were obscure at best. The top half was brown and the
bottom half was reddish or tawny brown. They were seen for less than a minute
before flying off to the east, never to be seen again. It was approximately
0900. If anybody makes it up that way keep an eye out for longspurs.
