Wright County Birding Day
Field Trip Report
Enjoyed a beautiful day of birding in Wright county today. Over all migration
was slow, but we did manage to turn up some interesting species. Here are some
of the locations that we spent time birding at:
Pelican Lake - East side, at 4 of the parking areas for the WPA.
Lake Pulaski - boat ramp on the South side of the lake.
Lake Maria State Park
Marcus Zumbrunnen County park - This park is located on the West side of CR 8,
about 1/2 mile South of the town of Hasty.
65 species of birds were observed and here are some of my favorites:
Trumpeter Swan - 6 pairs - We also got to watch a Trumpeter Swan chase a Canada
Goose in flight, for most of the length of Mud Lake. Were assuming the Canada
Goose, got a little to close to the
Swans nest.
Red-breasted Merganser
Horned Grebe - 40+ on Lake Pulaski
Sandhill Crane - East side of Pelican Lake
Great Horned Owl - Montissippi County Park
Long-eared Owl - Marcus Zumbrunnen County park - The bird was observed sitting
in a tree, right next to the trail. The Long-eared Owl was observed along the
Northern part of the longer
trail. There is a small map at the entrance to the
trail system at the park, showing the two loop trails.
Hermit Thrush - Lake Maria State Park
Lapland Longspur - Pelican Lake
Rusty Blackbird
