Sorry for the delay. Rice Lake is located along Flying Cloud Dr. in both
Carver and Hennepin County in the Upgrala Unit of the Minnesota Valley NWR.
Access to the north and west side of the lake is from a dirt pulloff along
Flying Cloud Dr. and access to the far east side of the lake is from a smaller
pulloff east of there. The east pulloff is a smaller area only in Hennepin
County. Today was the first day this year that I have checked that particular
pulloff and there were some Yellowlegs in that area(flew in from the west).
There is a parking area along the river of this unit but access into the unit
and to the south side of the lake is off limits due to private property. If
you wait long enough, most of the time birds will be in both counties. I plan
on talking to somebody at the Rapids Lake visitors center tomorrow to see if
access to Grass Lake(along Flying Cloud Dr east of Rice Lake) is possible. I
don't think it is. Sorry for the confusion. Besides the Rice Lake towards
Wright County, there is another Rice Lake northeast of Norwood-Young America.
There aren't that many lakes in Carver County. You'd think they could come up
with a unique name for these.
