Today, I birded with Steve and Jo Blanich and Butch Ukura -- and we
found a lot. We found several fields that had shorebirds, but the best
ones were about three miles north of Aitkin near the junction of CR 1
and CR 22. There we found several hundred shorebirds including: GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, KILLDEER,
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, LEAST SANDPIPERS,
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, STILT
SANDPIPERS AND WILSON'S SNIPES. Other things found along CR 1 include:
several BLACK TERNS, several YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS, DICKCISSELS (
this is one of at least 12 different fields where they can be found in
the county this summer), LECONTE'S SPARROWS, hundreds of swallows
(ROUGH-WINGED, BANK, TREE, CLIFF and BARN), 20 + SANDHILLS CRANES, 30 +
GREAT BLUE HERONS, several SORAS, several species of ducks. There was a
WHITE PELICAN along Cedarbrook Road (CR 15) west of town, as well as
several shorebirds. We also checked and the UPLAND SANDPIPERS were still
at the Aitkin Airport. Warren Nelson
