After consulting a couple of field guides and hearing from a couple of folks
way more familiar with MN migrants than I am, the loon I reported seeing a few
days ago is likely NOT an Arctic Loon.  Pacific Loon?  Maybe.  Common Loon
still in its gray plummage (in mid-July)?  Maybe.  Other ideas would be welcome:

Size of an adult Common Loon
Profile of an adult Common Loon
Swam on surface and dived/resurfaced like Common Loon
Gray head and body
Neck: white down front, gray down sides and back
Possible red streak down side of neck between the white and gray
No checkerboard markings on back.
No vocalizations.
Too far away in the available light to ascertain beak or eye color.
No photo - sorry....

Subject: [mou-net] Arctic Loon in Duluth

Don't know how unusual this sighting might be, and I apologize for the late
post, but this past Sunday morning I watched an Arctic Loon busily swimming and
diving very near the beach behind the Limnology Center in Duluth, just west of
the Lester River's current into Lake Superior.
