Hello MOU members, MOU-NET followers and friends in birding-
It's that time of the year when we are recruiting volunteers to spend 4
hours at the MN State Fair to chat about birds and MOU. We’re already off to
a rocking start! We have SIXTEEN shifts totally covered! We have another
THREE partially covered. And 17 empty. You can easily sign up by emailing
Kate Kelnberger or Jen Vieth or by using the MOU google calendar. I've listed
the empty volunteer shifts for your convenience.
It's a great experience. If you are still unsure about volunteering-read
on...
"Why should I volunteer?"
It's fun, easy and you get a free pass to the State Fair for the day. PLUS
you get to share your love of birds, birding, bird conservation and MOU
with others.
"But I don't think I know enough about birds..."
You probably know much more about birds than you think you do. PLUS you
will have another volunteer to help you answer any questions.
"I don't know anyone who will volunteer with me."
There are currently some great opportunities to volunteer with friendly,
experienced birders. If those volunteer shifts don't fit your schedule, sign
up for a shift that does and you will meet another enthusiastic birding
volunteer. You will not have to volunteer alone.
"I don't want to sell anything."
It is against the State Fair rules for us to collect money or sell
memberships so you have nothing to worry about. We simply share information
about
M.O.U. and birds. Our hope is that we will encourage others to get outdoors
and enjoy Minnesota's birds. We only hand out MOU brochures to those
visitors who are interested in becoming a member.
"What will people ask me?"
Every volunteer's experience is different. I've been asked to recommend
good places to go birding, to identify some mystery bird, or to explain why
woodpeckers are pecking holes in cedar siding. Most of all ... children and
adults just want to talk about birds. Birds they've seen at the cabin.
Birds that nest in their backyard. Birds they'd like to see someday. It's fun
to share their enthusiasm. You can see their eyes light up. You also meet
fellow MOU folks who stop by to meet a fellow birder and to chat about the
rare bird they've seen recently. You sometimes even learn about great new
locations to see new birds.
"When can I volunteer?"
