Minnesota birders, Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory is known as an observation point for an incredible fall migration of birds of prey (raptors). These birds are traveling from their summer breeding grounds to their wintering grounds and nearly 85,000 of these birds fly through Duluth on their journey southward. Each fall, nearly 18,000 human visitors come to Hawk Ridge to observe this migration! Our volunteers play host to these visitors. You don’t need to know how to identify raptors in order to be an effective volunteer – that’ s something you can learn ‘on the job’. We need people for a multitude of jobs including greeting visitors, selling merchandise, assisting naturalists with programs, pointing out birds, running errands, construction, trail maintenance, grounds work, office help and serving on planning committees. Requirements for volunteering: 1. Be friendly! 2. Attend one of the two following training sessions 3. Commit to 24 hours of volunteer service between September 1 and October 31 (we are onsite from 9-4 every day during the season). **our shifts are flexible, and we have several volunteers from the metro area and beyond--we'll work with YOUR schedule if you want to volunteer with us!
