Highlights of birds seen at Louisville Swamp unit of the MN Valley NWR in Scott
County during a Refuge/MRVAC field trip Saturday morning 8/11/12.
Family of sandhill cranes flying over the upland oak savanah and landing in the
marsh formed by Sand Creek to feed
about 7 lesser yellowlegs on the mudflats - water levels are lower
1 trumpeter swan (on far side of the lake formed by Sand Creek)
1 American White Pelican also on far side of the lake
at least 5 great egrets, numerous great blue herons
heard but didn't see belted kingfisher
Upland area:
2 juvenile bald eagles soaring overhead
1 brown thrasher
many cedar waxwings
bluegrey gnatcatchers (heard, hard to find in the leaves)
bluebird families
field sparrows in family groups with young
eastern kingbirds with fledged young still being fed
common yellowthroats
many American goldfinch
