Around 11:30 this morning I was quite surprised to observe a small flock of
Red Crossbills at the Talcot WMA headquarters in extreme southwest
Cottonwood County. The birds were flying low and calling overhead and
consisted of several adult birds, but I was unable to determine if any
juveniles were present during my brief look. There is a nice stand of
conifers at the headquarters that includes pine and spruce, so my guess is
that the birds were feeding on the cones of these trees.
