It appears that the majority of the shorebirds that had been near New Germany
left the area over the past day or two with yesterday's frontal passage.
Today I counted 6 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Spotted, 2 Semipalmated, 15 Least, and 2
Pectoral Sandpiper. I did notice a few unidentified shorebirds here and there
but not that many. After finding a Red-headed Woodpecker in that same area a
couple months ago, I had failed to see any there over the summer despite
repeated attempts to find one. Today, though, there were 2 Red-headed
Woodpecker in plain view on a dead tree. Warblers this morning at Rapids Lake
MVNWR included 2 Blue-winged, 1 Black-and-white(immature), 1 Tennessee, 2-3
Nashville, 3 Common Yellowthroat, 18 American Redstart, 4-5 Magnolia, 2 Yellow,
1 Chestnut-sided, and 2 Canada(male and female). There was also a Black-billed
Cuckoo at the unit.
