I just wanted to report on raptor migration through the M Hey birders, I just wanted to report on raptor migration through the Mankato area. Yesterday was our best day of the fall so far.
Turkey Vulture--2 Bald Eagle--4 Sharp-shinned Hawk--3 Cooper's Hawk--1 Red-tailed Hawk--8 Broad-winged Hawk--6 Swainson's Hawk--1 juv Peregrine Falcon--1 Merlin--2 American Kestrel--5 American White Pelican--225, 5 swallows, Common Nighthawk, Purple Finch, Red-breasted Nuthatch Year total: 130 We also had 3 unidentified birds. Two of which have the following description (they were circling together)--definite Buteo, very pale beneath with white tail, dark near the feet, white underwing (translucent--light just seemed to shine through) with distinct black commas but no patagial marks or mottling on wing linings. Wing tips were dark, but not black like on a Broad-winged Hawk--one of the students who saw these birds said they appeared brownish. The breast and belly were unmarked as well. Wing shape seemed very much like a Red-tailed Hawk's. Feel free to weigh in.
