The weather today was awesome for being out birding within the Lake Superior limits... big flakes were falling all day long. Sax-Zim Bog had at least 4" of snow, with some 5-6" deep drifts.
While leading a birding trip today in Sax-Zim Bog, we found three HOARY REDPOLLS. All of the Hoary Redpolls were observed along the road sides, not at any bird feeders. The Friends of Sax-Zim Bog birdfeeders (on Owl Avenue) were filled with many Common Redpolls, Pine Grosbeaks, a Brown Creeper, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and Black-capped Chickadees. One of the most surprising birds observed today was a female WOOD DUCK in the little creek connected to Stone Lake! Pics and eBird list below.
