1/29/2013 Had the pleasure of birding in the Sax/Zim Bog and parts of Lake 
county today, with Marlene Dollive.  We observed lots of Redpolls, Evening 
Grosbeaks, Pine Grosbeaks and Common Ravens in the Bog.  We missed on another 
Boreal Owl, in Two Harbors by about 5 minutes.  But, we observed a Great Grey 
Owl in the Sax/Zim Bog.  Here are some of the highlights from our day: Merlin - 
St. Louis County - 2:20 pm - 8300 block of Congdon Blvd. (Scenic 61).  There 
was an immature Merlin, sitting on top of a dead tree, along the North side of 
the highway.Peregrine Falcon - St. Louis County 2:00 pm - The Peregrine Falcon 
was observed sitting on a light pole near the intersection of I 35 and 21st 
Ave., in Duluth.Barred Owl - Lake County - 4:30 pm - Just East of the 
intersection of 4th Ave. and 2nd Street.  The bird was observed flying across, 
4th Ave. and sitting in a White Pine tree on the South side of the road.All the 
following sightings are from the Sax/Zim Bog, in St. Louis County.Great Grey 
Owl - 8:54 am - We observed a Great Grey Owl, about 4 miles North of Kolu Road, 
along McDavitt Road.  The bird was observed sitting on a conifer, near the West 
side of the road.Grey Jay - 5 were observed at the Admiral Road, feeding 
station.Black-billed Magpie - 2 were observed along CR 29, just South of 
Correction Line Road.Common Raven - 40+ were observed near the Owl Ave. feeding 
station.Boreal Chickadee - 2 were observed at the Admiral Road, feeding 
station.Hoary Redpoll - One, possibly two were observed at the Blue Spruce Road 
feeding station.Evening Grosbeak - 12 were observed at the Blue Spruce Road,
