SE Minnesota Birding Days
Field Trip Report
February 20, 21, 22, 2013
 
While leading a group, birding in Houston county.  We were able to observe many 
of the expected birds of the area, plus a few surprises.
 
Here are a few of those species:
Greater Scaup - 2/22 - Goodhue county - One male Greater Scaup was observed, at 
Colvill Park in Redwing.
Wild Turkey - 2/20, 21 - Houston county - Several flocks were observed along CR 
5 and Highway 76.
Black-crowned Night-Heron - 2/20, 22 - Winona county - We were able to relocate 
the Black-crowned Night-Heron that has been previously reported in Winona.
Rough-legged Hawk - 2/20, 21, 22 - Houston county - We had a number of 
Rough-legged Hawks on both CR 5 and CR 27.  
Golden Eagle - 2/21 - Houston county - We observed two Golden Eagles along CR 
5.  
   1. The first bird was observed at 12:30 pm, near the intersection of CR 5 
and Jefferson Road.  This was an Adult Golden Eagle and was observed in flight 
on the South side of CR 5.
   2. The second bird was observed at 1:12 pm, near the intersection of CR 5 
and Peyton Valley Road.  This bird was observed in flight on the North side of 
the road and then observed as        it flew over head and out of sight on the 
South side of the road.
Eastern Screech Owl - 2/20, 21 - Houston county - We observed a Brown/Red morph 
on the 20th and a Gray morph bird on the 21st.
Barred Owl - 2/20, 21 - Houston county
Belted Kingfisher - 2/21 - Houston county - CR 5
American Kestrel - 2/20, 21, 22 - Houston county
Horned Lark - 2/21 - Houston county
Tufted Titmouse - 2/21 Houston county - One Tufted Titmouse, was seen and heard 
along Hillside Road.  Near the Reno campground, about 1/2 mile West of Highway 
26.
Red-breasted Nuthatch - Houston county - Found in a few locations, one being 
the cemetery along State Highway 16, West of Hokah.
Brown Creeper - Houston county
Hermit Thrush - Houston county - A single Hermit Thrush, was observed at the 
same location that we observed the Tufted Titmouse at.
American Tree Sparrow - Houston/Winona counties - These were common in both 
counties, with over 100 observed in one field in Winona.
White-crowned Sparrow - Houston county
Dark-eyed Junco - Houston/Winona county
Purple Finch - Houston county
Common Redpoll - Houston county
Pine Siskin - Houston county
 
We also observed a flock of Common Grackle's in the town of New Albin, Iowa.  
Which were about 1/2 mile South of the Minnesota boarder.
