Today (Saturday) I joined an enjoyable Hiawatha Valley Audubon Chapter (based in Redwing) field trip around Lake Pepin. After crows, the most common birds seemed to be Bald Eagles. We found three eagles already on nests. A few of us also saw a Crow carrying nesting material. The most interesting birds were a feral flock of domestic geese, which refused our attempts to convert them to White-fronted. The most notable miss was the Harlequin Duck, which was not around the many fishing boats below the Alma lock and dam. We also had a too brief encounter with an otter.
After I left the group, I had twelve species of waterfowl, most of them at the river behind the Treasure Island casino north of Redwing. This included both Scaup, Ring-neck Ducks, Redheads, Canvasback, and a male Pintail. The best bird was a Sand Hill Crane that was heard flying by at that location. -- Steve Weston On Quigley Lake in Eagan, MN [email protected] ---- Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
