I birded through some of Dakota County this afternoon and while 180th Marsh
was frozen tight there were some signs of spring. After finding the
resident Eurasian Collared Doves in Vermillion I found 16 Tundra Swans and
flock of Red-winged Blackbirds at Hampton Marsh off of Northfield Blvd. I
proceeded to Great Western Industrial Park and found an American Kestrel, 1
Red-tailed Hawk and 1 dark morph Rough-legged Hawk.
Lake Byllesby was somewhat open but the water level is extremely low
showing more mud flats than open water. Among the more than a thousand
Canada Geese, I found 2 Greater White-fronted Geese, 3 Cackling Geese 13
Tundra Swans and dozens of Killdeer running around on the mud. Ducks
included Common Mergansers, Gadwall, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Wood Ducks,
and some distant Scaup.
