4 participants started the MOU field trip today at Miesville Ravine. Our tracks were the first made in the snow as we walked the trails along the Cannon River, an upland prairie which overlooks the river and the trail going up on Trout Brook. Highlight birds included 2 American Woodcock, several Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Eastern Phoebe, Winter Wren, Hermit Thrush, Swamp Sparrow and both Kinglet species.
After this we visited Lake Byllesby seeing Greater & Less Yellowlegs, Least & Pectoral Sandpiper plus many waterfowl. Then a stop at the Great Western Industrial Park yielded Lapland Longspur, Rough-legged Hawk, Swainson’s Hawk and Short-eared Owl. Re-finding the Short-eared Owl that Julian Sellers had posted the location for was definitely the best bird of the day. It was fun to run into many other bird watchers at these locations and I think everyone would agree we had a very successful day. -- KEVIN D.
