After the snow storm cleared I did some late evening birding on horseback. I was thrilled to find a pair of American Bitterns in tall grass next to a swamp loaded with waterfowl. They offered amazing views! Something that can be hard for this species!
Also in the same area we saw 6 Merlins! A Merlin is often a hard bird for me to get each year. I have never seen so many in one area as they sat towards the tips of the oaks and spruce trees. They appeared to be in pairs. I was surprised in that they did not seem to mind each other or me on my horse.
