*A Love Affair with Birds: *
*

The Life of Thomas Sadler Roberts
*

by Sue Leaf, author

Join Sue Leaf May 23 at 7:30 to hear about the father of Minnesota
ornithology, T. S. Roberts, who witnessed the last days of the Passenger
Pigeon, swooping in great flocks through downtown Minneapolis, saw hundreds
of Upland Sandpipers stopping over on prairie in northeast Minneapolis, and
documented myriad migrating waterfowl on the Minneapolis chain of lakes.

After an illustrious career as a medical doctor, Roberts quit to take an
unpaid position at the U of M, teaching the state's first ornithology
course and guiding the natural history museum to national acclaim. He wrote
*The Birds of Minnesota*, advised Minnesota's first Audubon chapter,
Minneapolis Audubon (still in existence) and was crucial to the
establishment of many wildlife refuges. All this, and a genuinely nice guy,
a man's man and a favorite with the ladies!

Sue Leaf’s book on T.S. Roberts will be published May 2 by the University
of Minnesota Press.
