Hi All—

I have been meaning to report to you-all that, after banding some 600
juncos this spring, I have had one recovery. A bird I banded on 4 April
2013 near Northfield, Rice Co., was recovered 5 miles south of Park Rapids
in Hubbard Co., Minnesota, on 6 May 2013. This recovery is not a
spectacular distance, but same-season recoveries are always of interest.

One of the odd aspects of modern America is that these days citizens are
less prone to report banded birds than, say, in the 1920s or 30s. There
are a few hypotheses for this downward trend—folks not wanting to cooperate
with the government, kids inside all day playing video games….
