I spent Saturday birding in Winona, Wabasha, and Dakota counties. The best birds of the day included a Black-billed Cuckoo (south of Lake City) and several calling Whip-poor-wills near Frontenac. I had a Whip-poor-will in a valley west of Lake City that I often find them during the summer. The other two locations (west and north of Frontenac Station) are locations that I find them only during migration. We had lots of good birds for the Breeding Bird Atlas.
The Whip-poor-wills were heard during my Frog & Toad survey. This was probably the worst F&T survey run that I have had in the approximately ten years I have done this. I had more birds singing at night (8) than frogs and toads (3). Those are not the number of species, but the number of individuals.
