Hi,
Late this morning I found a Nelson's Sparrow at the Pelican Lake WPA east
of Albertville. As far as I can tell, this represents a first county
record.
Take county highway 119 south from county 37. Once 119 turns east
continue for about 1/2 mile, then park in the WPA parking lot on the south
side of the highway (large Pelican Lake WPA sign in the lot). Looking
south towards the lake from the lot, there is a small cattail marsh before
the lake. Walk through the prairie grass towards these cattails, walk
into the cattails at the east end. The interior is mostly open and
largely dry, with some small puddles remaining. This is where the
Nelson's Sparrow was found, many sparrows were going into the puddles and
bathing, most were Savannah or Swamp. By remaining still and quietly
pishing, the Nelson's was enticed to walk within 5 feet of my position.
There is another small patch of cattail to the east that looks promising,
but is much wetter. I flushed a few Soras while walking around this
marsh, as well as one late Bobolink.
Earlier in the day I found a few White-crowned Sparrows and one Harris's
Sparrow at the Albertville compost site.
