I guided Monday-Wednesday with two different groups and I want Hello: I guided Monday-Wednesday with two different groups and I want to share some interesting sightings.
Monday: -Great Gray Owl in Sax-Zim Bog along the Admiral Rd about 2.0 miles north of Cranberry Rd. -Boreal Chickadee along the Admiral Rd in same area as Great Gray Owl. -Sharp-tailed Grouse (11 birds) on Poplar Rd just 3/4 mile south of Arkola Rd (CR 52) -Black-billed Magpies along Sax Rd, McDavitt Rd near intersection of Sax Rd (CR 28) Tuesday: -Black-backed Woodpecker along the Admiral Rd just a tenth of a mile north of feeding station. -Sharp-tailed Grouse in the same area where I saw them on Monday. Wednesday: -Ross's Goose ( young juvenile bird ) Two Harbors cemetery in Lake County. Relocated later in the afternoon by Peder Svingen. During those days we saw many sparrow species including Fox Sparrow and Clay-colored Sparrow. Unfortunately there is still some logging going on in Sax-Zim Bog. Along Owl Avenue on the diagonal section of this road loggers are removing most of the remaining decidous trees that served as a buffer zone between the road and the black spruce bog on the west side. Also a huge area is being logged out on the NE section of the diagonal part of Owl Avenue. Most the trees being logged are mature poplar and ash trees. Its not a clear cut and there are some remaining mature trees to reseed the area. If anything Great Gray Owls and Hawk Owls have more areas to hunt rodent but many species that nested in these stands of woods like Mourning Warblers, Nashville, Canada and Redstarts lost a lot of habitat.
