Hello: The Sax-Zim Bog Winter Birding Festival is now open for registrations. The event is set for February 14-15-16, 2014 at Meadowlands, Minnesota. To read more about the festival and to sign up for the event please visit our website.http://sax-zimbog.com/ Friday Night Speaker: Sandy Komito will speak to us about his travels and of course Big Year listing. Big Year competitors of 1998 were the subject of a book, The Big Year, by Mark Obmascik. Three birders, Sandy Komito, Al Levantin and Greg Miller, chased Komito’s prior record of 721 bird species. In the end Sandy Komito kept the record, listing 745 bird species plus 3 submitted in 1998 and later accepted by state record committees for a revised total of 748 bird species seen in a single year. The book was adapted for the 2011 20th Century Fox film The Big Year starring Steve Martin as Al Levantin, Jack Black as Greg Miller and Owen Wilson as Sandy Komito. Saturday Night Speaker: Scott Mehus, Education Director for National Eagle Center The National Eagle Center is a world-class interpretive center located on the banks of the Mississippi River in Wabasha, MN. We are home to five rescued eagles, four bald eagles and one golden eagle. Scott will bring his eagles up to Meadowlands and speak to us about National Eagle Center and the projects they conduct on Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles in Minnesota. There will be field trips to Sax-Zim Bog, Duluth area and Lake County on Saturday and Sunday. We will be offering a pre-festival trip on Friday to Sax-Zim Bog. These field trips in the past have produced a lot of good bird sightings such as Barrow’s Goldeneye, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Ruffed Grouse, Spruce Grouse, Northern Goshawk, Glaucous Gull, Thayer’s Gull, Iceland Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Snowy Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Great Gray Owl, Boreal Owl, Black-backed Woodpecker, American Three-toed Woodpecker, Northern Shrike, Gray Jay, Black-billed Magpie, Boreal Chickadee, Varied Thrush, Townsend Solitaire, Bohemian Waxwing, Snow Bunting, Pine Grosbeak, Red Crossbill, White-winged Crossbill, Common Redpoll, Hoary Redpoll and Evening Grosbeak.
