There are still HUNDREDS of sandhill cranes to be seen during the day, foraging
in the newly harvested corn fields northwest of the refuge, along Sherburne
CR's 3 and 11.  A couple of large flocks were very close to the road.  Creep up
slowly and stay in your car to get close views.  There were also quite a few in
fields south and west of Bailey Ray's Roadhouse (good food) in Santiago.

On my way home from work last night, I counted 5 rough-legged hawks along CR's
9 and 5, west and north of the refuge.  Refuge volunteer Rover Jack G. saw two
on the wildlife drive yesterday as well.

Just a reminder - the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive gate is closed during the
9-day deer/gun season, November 9-17.  The area is open to hunters, but only by
foot.
