I left Duluth an hour before sunrise yesterday morning to explore some
areas north of Two Harbors. Three Evening Grosbeaks and 4 Pine Grosbeaks
made up the "highlight" species of the morning, and other beautiful &
braving-the-cold sightings consisted of 9 Downy Woodpeckers, 15 Common
Ravens, 1 White-breasted Nuthatch, 15 Black-capped Chickadees and 7
American Goldfinches.

The morning was considerably quiet, likely due to the bitter cold. The
relative warm front just started to break through the mid-day hours; prior
to about 11:00am, the temps were between -15F and -22F. Bird sightings
mentioned were observed while driving, and over the course of about two
miles of accumulated hiking. The bulk of the birding was done between the
Hwy 2 / Hwy 1 intersection, and various trails off of the road leading to
Babbitt. On the drive back to Duluth, I stopped in two Harbors, and saw 5
Common Goldeneyes in Burlington Bay (the bay on the northeast side of Two
Harbors). Too much snow was falling at the time to scan Agate Bay.

Good birding,
Erik Bruhnke
