Here is a belated report from visiting the bog this past Sunday. I led a
little trip starting near Two Harbors. No owls were found around the
perimeter of Two Harbors, and a few groups of Herring Gulls and Common
Goldeneyes were seen throughout the bays in Two Harbors. Canal Park (being
exposed to the northeast winds) was dangerously cold and gull-less. The
mid-day and afternoon was spent soaking up Sax-Zim Bog; where we had a
gorgeous Northern Hawk Owl, American Goldfinches galore, two beautiful
Boreal Chickadees and more. If you're looking for a feeding frenzy of
goldfinches I highly recommend the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog birdfeeders,
located about 1.7 miles south of the Arkola Rd / Owl Ave intersection (on
Owl Ave). I have never seen so many goldfinches at one time! We ended the
day by witnessing two Snowy Owls bickering at each other as they flew by
each other at civil twilight. A real treat!
