I was out today birding with some folks from Kentucky. Highlights:
Great Gray Owl: Admiral Road in Sax-Zim Bog about a 1/4 mile south of the Admiral Feeders. This is by far the most reliable owl in Sax-Zim Bog. We saw the owl this evening around 4pm and it was also seen by a friend this morning at 8:30am. Northern Hawk Owl: Still at being seen on Owl Avenue about a 1/4 mile south of Arkola Rd in Sax-Zim Bog. I got word another Hawk Owl was seen west of CR 7 opposite of the Malmberg Sod Farms. Another Hawk Owl was reported to me today in Sax-Zim Bog on CR 133 about a 1/2 mile east of CR 7. Evening Grosbeaks continue to come to a feeder on CR 444 which runs parallel to CR 5. Take Zim Rd of CR 27 and head west to the intersection of CR 5 and cross over CR 5 to CR 444 and take a right turn on CR 444 and house is on right side. The feeders can be easily viewed from public road. Today I gotten a report of 40 Evening Grosbeaks coming to this feeder. Pine Grosbeaks were seen away from any feeders. Saw 3 males on Birch Rd in Sax-Zim Bog. Take Pine Rd off CR 133 ( Recycling building location ) and follow Pine to Birch Rd. Eventually this Birch RD connects to Blue Spruce Rd and back to CR 133. Saw 3 female Pine Grosbeaks on the Riley Rd in Duluth. These birds have been off and on seen here for nearly a month feeding on the berries on the north side of Riley Rd. Take Jean Duluth Rd to Riley Rd. Boreal Chickadees and Grays continue to feed at the Admiral Rd feeders in Sax-Zim Bog. Feeders are roughly about 3.5 north of Cranberry Rd on Admiral Rd on the west side. Northern Goshawk: Saw a nice immature Northern Goshawk at the intersection of Pine Rd & CR 133 in Sax-Zim Bog. Ruffed Grouse: Observed 11 individuals in Sax-Zim Bog. The bulk of these grouse were seen around 4:45pm along the Nichols Lake Rd off CR 7 feeding in the Birch Trees. Northern Shrikes and Snow Buntings in the Sax-Zim Bog. Snow Buntings just south of the Byrn's Greenhouse on CR 7 and Shrikes are found along CR near the greenhouse, along CR 27 (Zim Rd) and along CR 133 near CR 47 and along Lake Nichols Lake Rd. Thayer's Gull(s) and Great Black-backed Gull: Duluth Canal Park along the break walls. Gulls were mainly absent in Duluth due to all the frigid air and lack of open water. Today the temps were in the 30's and the ice was moving out and lots of open water. Counted 110 gulls and among them were one 3rd cycle Thayer's and one adult. A first cycle Great Black-backed Gull was among the Herring Gulls. Hopefully Duluth's weather remains balmy and more gulls will congregate at this site in larger numbers. Part of the joy of birding is sharing bird sightings and locations to others.
