1/18/14 Minnesota River Valley Audubon Chapter NE Minnesota Birding Days January 1, 17, 2014 I, spent the last couple days leading a field trip for the Minnesota River Valley Audubon Chapter to NE Minnesota. Over all, the birding was extremely quite! Except for a couple Northern Hawk Owls and some birds at feeding stations, there were few birds to be seen. We covered the Sax Zim bog and Aitkin County road 18 on the 16th. Then on the 17th, we did a run up Lake county road 2, over to Ely and then back to Duluth along Lake Superior. A note for anyone birding in Lake county. I would recommend that you skip stopping at the old pink house, which is now a grey house and has a couple feeders. This is located just west of the town of Isabella on MN 1. The owner was not pleased with our group stopping there, he has concerns about accidents, among other things. Thanks for all the previous postings from the area and those that maintain feeders that are open to birding groups. Here are a some of the birds we observed: St. Louis County Canal Park, in Duluth - 1/17 - American Black Duck, Mallard, Common Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser Northern Goshawk - 1/16 - An adult Northern Goshawk was briefly observed along Stickney Road, 1/2 mile North of Arkola road. Northern Hawk Owl - 1/16 - A Northern Hawk Owl was observed along the West side of Owl Avenue, just South of Arkola Road. Northern Shrike - 1/16 - We observed two Northern Shrikes, one on Admiral Road and one on CR 29. Gray Jays - 1/16 - Gray Jays were observed at the feeding station along Admiral Road. Black-billed Magpie - Black-billed Magpies were observed in two locations. One just North of Sax Road, along McDavitt Road and one was observed in the town of Meadowlands, along CR 133. Boreal Chickadee - Several Boreal Chickadees were observed at the feeding station along Admiral road. Pine Grosbeak - Pine Grosbeaks were observed along MN 1, just East of Ely. Evening Grosbeak - A dozen were observed at a feeder along Winton Point road in the town of Winton, just East of Ely.
