Hello: Update on birds I located today and the past few days while guiding.
*Thursday Jan 23* *Lake County* - 8 Spruce Grouse ( 2 males and 6 females ) 1 mile north of the Sand River pull off on Lake County Rd 2 at 8:30am. - Black-backed Woodpecker (male) by chance a male Black-backed Woodpecker flew across Hwy. 1 between the Kawishiwi River bridge and River Point Rd and landed on a spruce tree for us to view. *St. Louis Co. * *Winton, MN ( 3 miles NE of Ely, MN )* - Evening Grosbeaks ( 24 plus ) coming to a feeder located at 121 Main Street. - Pine Grosbeaks coming to the same feeder and like Sparky has mentioned in an earlier post this week, the Pine Grosbeaks are getting more common at the feeders versus how scarce they were in December. *Friday, Jan 24* *St. Louis Co.* *Sax-Zim Bog area* - Great Gray Owl: 2.8 miles north of Sax Rd on Admiral Rd ( south of Admiral feeders) This same owl was seen by several birders and a local guide just north of Admiral Rd feeders on Thursday evening. So this owl is roaming much of the black spruce / Tamarack bog from north of power line clearing to the sand pit area on the Admiral Rd. (CR 788). We saw the owl today at 8:40am and watched it catch a meadow vole in front of our parked car. - Snowy Owl (imm female) was seen today flying across CR 7 near Dibble Rd which is across from the Malmborg Sod Farm. Last night both this owl and the imm male owl were seen in this area. -Northern Hawk Owl on Owl Avenue and Arkola Rd (CR 28) is still present as of today. Today it was on the SW corner of Owl Avenue and Arkola Rd. -Snow Buntings were seen on RR tracks along CR 7. This flock roams a lot along CR 7. Today we seen the flock a little less than .5 miles north of Arkola RD. So keep your eyes open along CR 7 from Arkola RD (CR 52) to the Zim RD (CR 27) All the other specialties were seen today in the bog ( Boreal Chickadees, Gray Jays ) at the Admiral feeders. I filled the feeders full with black oil sunflower seeds today for the busy weekend of birders that are sure to be visiting the bog this weekend. -- *Mike Hendrickson* *Mike Hendrickson Guiding <http://mikehendricksonguiding.com>* *Sax-Zim Bog <http://www.sax-zimbog.com>* ---- Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
