Hello: Sax-Zim Bog:
Great Gray Owls are pairing up and sightings are not all that consistent. If you go to the Sax-Zim Bog to look for these owls, I would focus your search on Admiral Rd and McDavitt Rd at dusk or dawn. There were some sightings on County Rd 7 south of Byrn's greenhouse and north of the Zim Sod Farm on CR 7. Other spots include Owl Avenue near Overton Rd intersection and also CR 133 between CR7 and Blue Spruce Rd. Hawk Owls are being seen in Sax-Zim Bog on Stone Lake Rd and the same owl might be hanging out on CR 7 near Zim Sod Farm. Other locations in the bog to check is on Owl Avenue just south of CR 52 (Arkola Rd) and along CR 133 one mile east of CR 7. Snowy Owl: The immature male on Greenfield Rd and Zim Rd in Sax-Zim Bog has left the area and no sightings in the last 2 1/2 weeks. The adult female Snowy Owl at the Zim Sod farm on CR 7 has been seen off and on. Rough-legged Hawks and Northern Harriers have arrived in the bog. * I taken down all my hanging feeders on the Admiral Rd and the only feeders left are some suet feeders and the 5 gallon feeder. Boreal Chickadees are occasionally being seen on Admiral Rd, McDavitt Rd and along CR 52 about 1 miles west of Stickney Rd in the company of Black-capped Chickadees. Mary Lou's feeders on CR 444 off CR 27 in the NW section of the Sax-Zim Bog area still have Evening Grosbeaks. She still welcomes birders to visit her feeders. I just got word tonight from Loretta who operates the Kelsey Whiteface Rd feeders that she just filled her feeders. Loretta was ill for sometime and is now feeling much better to make trips to the feeders. Duluth: Great Gray Owl has been seen off and on along the Lester River Rd in the last two weeks. Just north of golf course on the Lester River Rd there is a open field with a gray barn and here you may find the Great Gray Owl. Northern Hawk Owl is also being seen at this same location. I saw this owl last Wednesday hunting from the telephone pole. That's about it.
