My neighbor called to me yesterday saying she'd just seen a "black-winged red bird." I thought maybe she was making a joke about a red-winged black bird, but, no, she said she had seen a completely red bird with black wings. I said it sounded like a Scarlet Tanager and went across the yards to go look for it. No luck. But I'm pretty sure that's what she saw. Other First of the Years this week: Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (previously reported) Brown-headed Cowbird Song Sparrow Fox Sparrow Also appearing again, the White-throated Sparrow we've had all winter.
