Ready for a blind date? Greater Prairie Chickens are booming on leks in
Becker County, MN. Get a close up view of the prairie birds during the
Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds May 15-18. Nearly 200 species are recorded
annually during field trips to see birds of the prairies, forests and
shorebirds with expert birders and a naturalist. Discover from keynote
presenter Dr. Rosalind Renfrew where Bobolinks winter and the challenges
they face. She banded Bobolink 0961-10071 in Bolivia and 3 ½ years later it
was found 12 miles from her home in Vermont. The bird had flown at least
35,000 miles in those 3 ½ years! Other presenters: Joel Greenberg on
observing 100 years since the last Passenger Pigeon, Sue Leaf on the Father
of MN ornithology and Carrol Henderson on Wildlife Photography. Free
Saturday workshop on Shorebird I.D., wine tasting socials, exhibitors.
