The Garganey was still present at the intersection of CR F and Abel Road today. It was first in the pond on the northeast of the junction, where it spent some time half-hidden ashore, in the foliage across the water. From time to time, it made itself more visible by engaging in preening motions; while its camouflage proved daunting, the striking white head-stripe gave it away. It did venture into the water for a more complete look, but its path took it behind the cattails, and it flew off into waters beyond view, just north. Later on, the bird reappeared in the open, and ultimately it flew over Abel Road above our heads, and landed in the canal just behind us, on the south side. Its deep color and extensive markings were easily seen in detail. We watched it swim casually south on the canal, stopping to duck its head under and feed along the way. Although it had spent much time in proximity to Blue-winged Teal and N. Shovelers, its jaunt down the canal was undertaken solo. It might be interesting to note what other associates, if any, it chooses. Linda Whyte
