Father Hennepin State Park
Field Trip Report
 
Our group enjoyed some nice days of birding, in and around Father Hennepin 
State Park.  We birded In Kanabec and Mille Lacs counties.  We observed 101 
species in the two counties, all of which are species that nest in the area.
 
Here are some of the species our group observed:
Trumpeter Swan - Kanabec county
Common Goldeneye - Mille Lacs county - A female was observed with 13 babies, 
including one riding on her back. 
Ruffed Grouse - Kanabec county
Least Bittern - Mille Lacs county - 10:40 am - Shakopee Lake boat access, which 
is located on the SW corner of the lake along CR 26.  We observed or heard 
three Least Bitterns at this location.  First spotted by Allen Loken and then 
the entire group.  Several were observe flying across the open water at the 
boat access and also in the cattails on the East side of the boat access.
Broad-winged Hawk
Virginia Rail
Common Tern - Mille Lacs county - Several were observed from Father Hennepin 
State park and a third Common Tern was observed from the Cove boat access.
Black-billed Cuckoo - Mille Lacs county - One bird was heard on the West side 
of the Korsness pool of the Mille Lacs WMA.  This area is located on the East 
side of CR 19, just South of 320th Ave.

Alder Flycatcher
Common Raven - Mille Lacs & Kanabec counties
Sedge Wren
Marsh Wren
Wood Thrush - Mille Lac county - Mille Lacs Kathio State park - Glacial Ridge 
Trail - A single Wood Thrush was heard at the half way point of the trail.  
Warblers - We observed 11 species  of Warblers 
Ovenbird - Most abundant of the Warblers and heard in many locations in both 
counties
Northern Waterthrush - Mille Lacs county - Mille Lacs Kathio State park - 
Glacial Ridge Trail - Three birds were heard along this trail and one was 
observed.
Golden-winged Warbler - Both counties - While we were in lots of great looking 
habitat for this species we only observed three Golden-winged Warblers for the 
entire trip.
Nashville Warbler 
Pine Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Purple Finch
