Yesterday afternoon, while running my wife's school bus route into NE Slope county and NW Hettinger County I observed approximately 150 Swainson's Hawks circling in a tight and high column with many hawks swooping in over the hills, mainly from the north at low altitudes. Finally about five miles further west I came across another large gathering of Swainson's Hawks on both sides of the road gathering in two stubble fields as well. There were probably at least 200 there, and they seemed to be swooping in from the north as well. It was an amazing sight! I assume that they are gathering for their long migration to South America.
