Hi All-- On Wednesday morning, John Holden and I birded the 180th Street Marsh in Dakota Co. John spied an American Bittern slightly beyond the west side of the marsh on the south side of the road. I have no idea how he saw it--the bird stood still at the edge, and slightly inside a corn field. Even when John said "Its right in front of us!" I could not see it.
The bittern then walked out of the corn field and up to our car. I got out of the car and the bird did not fly until I turned my back to it to return to the car. I had not wanted to flush it, but, even so, the bittern only flew the few yards back to the corn field.
